Not at all! Our professional construction staff and experienced Crew Leaders will teach you everything you need to know.
What do I need to bring?
A positive attitude!
We provide all the tools and safety equipment you’ll need, including hard hat, safety glasses, steel-toe boots and work gloves. If you have your own PPE, you are welcome to wear it.
We also provide coffee, snacks and catered lunch, but feel free to bring anything else you’d like to eat or drink. We’ll have water, but feel free to bring your own bottle.
What's for lunch?
Typical lunches include sandwiches, and we always have gluten free, vegetarian, and non-pork options. For people who have very specific dietary restrictions, we have a refrigerator and microwave on-site that you are welcome to use.
What should I wear?
Dress in layers that are appropriate for any weather, and wear clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty. Long pants are required year-round, and long hair needs to be tied back.
Can I start after the start time?
No. Each day, at about 8:30 AM we start off the Build Day with a safety talk by one of our experienced site staff. All volunteers need to hear this, and sign-off before work can start for the day. However, if you do need to leave early, just let the Site Supervisor and your Crew Leader know.
How can I find out the stage of the build?
The stage of build changes constantly. The tasks you'll be doing on your Build Day will depend on many variables, including weather, what work needs to be completed that day, and how many volunteers are in your group.
For example, if it's a nice day you might end up doing landscaping instead of painting. These decisions are made by the Habitat Site Supervisor and are often made in the morning before you arrive.
Do I get to choose which task I work on?
Tasks will be arranged the morning of your Build Day, and your group members will have the opportunity to choose the task most interesting to them.
Is the work safe?
Yes, you will never be asked to perform a task that is unsafe. You will be paired with an experienced. Crew Leader who will provide you with quality safety training and instruction.
What if I need a break outside of the scheduled times?
No problem. There is a scheduled coffee break in the morning around 10:15 am, and lunch is at noon, but you’re welcome to take additional breaks throughout the day as needed!
Are there restrooms on site?
Yes, there are port-a-potties on every construction site.
Will the Build Day still happen if the weather is bad?
We build rain or shine (or snow), but extreme weather conditions may require your day to be rescheduled for your safety.
I have an injury that limits my ability. Should I still come?
If you think that you’ll be limited in the level of physical work you can do, it is likely that we can find some modified duties to utilize your other abilities.
Just let your Site Supervisor know when you are put into groups, and they will not ask you to do anything you’re not comfortable with.
